Stocking rainbow trout in Lake Massawippi. Please excuse the amateur editing; it’s not my specialty.

I had the privilege this Saturday with my sons, in Ayer’s Cliff, of witnessing an exceptional moment for our community and for the health of Lake Massawippi: 5,000 rainbow trout were stocked thanks to the efforts of the Lac Massawippi Conservation Club and many dedicated volunteers.
This stocking project is made possible only through community support. Each trout costs $5, meaning $25,000 must be raised every year to maintain this initiative. There is no government funding for rainbow trout, as the ministry focuses instead on stocking lake trout. The project therefore relies entirely on private donations, fundraising activities, and volunteer involvement.
An exceptional fishing lake
Lake Massawippi is one of Québec’s true gems — an outstanding body of water that continues to attract more and more sport-fishing enthusiasts. Yes, I admit it, I’m passionate… but I’m not exaggerating when I say it is one of the most beautiful fishing lakes in Québec, and perhaps even in the world.
A mobilized fishing community
Two major fishing tournaments are now held annually on the lake:
• The Conservation Club Tournament
Organized by volunteers, it raises funds to support the annual stocking program.
• The Cancer Benefit Tournament
Created by a volunteer angler, with all profits donated to cancer-related initiatives.
These events bring passionate anglers together from across the region. During the opening weekend of the fishing season this spring, over 200 boats were on the water at sunrise. And this fall, the charity tournament gathered 65 boats in a single day. Truly inspiring!
And it’s just the beginning…
On September 18, thanks to the support of Cie Vilandré, the participation of a dozen dedicated volunteers and nearly 70 enthusiastic guests, we held the very first Lobster Supper fundraiser. It was a warm, memorable evening that raised $1,000, officially donated to the president of the Lac Massawippi Conservation Club, Mr. Philip Church.
If Mother Nature gives us sufficient ice this winter, a group of volunteers and I will organize the first friendly family ice-fishing tournament, benefitting the Lac Massawippi Conservation Club.
Thank you
