You simply need to observe the tourists walking through the streets \u2014 they seem a bit disoriented, disappointed to find so many closed doors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is urgent for the Municipality of North Hatley to take action to reverse this trend. The potential is clearly there \u2014 we simply need to better highlight winter activities in North Hatley and the surrounding area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We already have several assets:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Lac Massawippi<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Solstice Sauna<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Mont Hatley<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/massawippi.org\/\">Sentiers Massawippi<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>A cross-country ski trail along the Rivi\u00e8re Massawippi<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>An outdoor skating rink and, eventually, a refrigerated one<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to these, there are also indoor activities such as curling, along with others that I may not yet be aware of, which could help enhance the winter experience for both residents and visitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Solstice Sauna<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/solsticesauna.com\/en\/\">Solstice Sauna<\/a><\/strong>, located near the public wharf, offers cold-water immersion combined with a hot sauna \u2014 a unique and very enjoyable experience to discover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Mont Hatley<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Did you know that at <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/monthatley.com\/2_29_ski-de-montagne-randonnee-alpine.html\">Mont Hatley<\/a><\/strong>, it is possible to practice alpine touring \/ backcountry ski (with climbing skins) as well as snowshoeing? This is an activity I highly recommend experiencing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Cross-country skiing along the Rivi\u00e8re Massawippi<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There is also a cross-country ski trail along the <strong>Rivi\u00e8re Massawippi<\/strong>, generally well maintained. Walking is possible, but please avoid stepping in the ski tracks.<br>Could we also consider a <strong>winter ice path for skating<\/strong> along this area?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Outdoor rink \u2014 Parc de la Rivi\u00e8re<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The outdoor skating rink at <strong>Parc de la Rivi\u00e8re<\/strong> is another fantastic activity. However, it needs to be ready when winter arrives. At the moment, it seems it could already be operational. Let\u2019s hope the cold weather holds and that we can skate by Christmas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Snow biking<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Could we consider creating <a href=\"https:\/\/gorgedecoaticook.qc.ca\/en\/winter-activities\/fatbike\/\">a snow-biking trail with electric fat bikes<\/a>, similar to what is offered in the <strong>Coaticook<\/strong> region? We have everything required to make it happen. Of course, such a project would require motivated entrepreneurs \u2014 and, most importantly, municipal support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Skating on the lake<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Could we also imagine <strong>ice skating on the lake<\/strong>? Certainly, it involves risks, but it exists elsewhere and remains possible. Skating on a frozen lake can be even more impressive than skating in a public park. Could we even consider hosting a <strong>winter classic event<\/strong> with former professional hockey players? This might become possible with a refrigerated rink.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Ice fishing<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, once the lake is safely frozen, <strong>ice fishing<\/strong> becomes an incredible and low-cost activity. So why is it not promoted more in North Hatley? With the help of engaged citizens, the municipality could easily organize ice-fishing days or events to boost winter tourism. It is simple and inexpensive.<br>The town of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/lespetitspoissons.ca\/nous-joindre\/\">Rivi\u00e8re-Saint-Anne<\/a><\/strong> clearly understood this by developing a tourist experience around <strong>poisson des chenaux<\/strong> fishing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Manoir Hovey<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Moreover, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/manoirhovey.com\/fr\/experiences\/sur-le-lac\/\">Manoir Hovey<\/a><\/strong> offers ice-fishing activities each winter through a partnership with Mr. Florent H\u00e9bert, fishing guide. Do they also offer lake skating? I am not sure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why is there no similar ice-fishing offer from the public wharf or <strong>Pleasant View Beach<\/strong>? Lack of interest? Lack of awareness? Yet we have <strong>one of the most beautiful fishing lakes in Qu\u00e9bec<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Winter carnival or festive winter event<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Could we also imagine a <strong>winter carnival<\/strong> or seasonal celebration in the heart of the village? Warm mulled wine, music, ice sculptures, fire pits, etc. Of course, to make it happen, we would need engaged citizen ambassadors \u2014 and municipal support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Let\u2019s see how all of this evolves!<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>With several businesses temporarily or permanently closed, the village is starting to look like a ghost town.
