Refrigerated skating rinks represent an excellent solution for extending the winter season, which has become increasingly difficult to maintain due to significant temperature fluctuations that complicate the upkeep of outdoor ice surfaces.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Across Quebec, many municipalities are turning to this type of infrastructure. North Hatley is also among those wishing to offer such a facility to its residents. However, in several cities, projects that once appeared promising are now being paused or even abandoned due to the sharp rise in construction and operating costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Only a few years ago, operating expenses were already considered high, estimated at around $150,000 per year<\/a>. Today, some projections reach closer to $450,000 annually, representing a major financial challenge for many municipalities.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fortunately, in North Hatley, elected officials have confirmed that the project will have no impact on taxpayers\u2019 wallets, which are already heavily burdened. According to information shared by Mayor Ms. Gerrish, both the construction and all operating costs will be covered in perpetuity by the Pollock family foundation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We can therefore consider ourselves fortunate, as without this support, the municipality would likely not have the financial capacity to undertake such an infrastructure project given the current financial situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The tendering process for the refrigerated rink in North Hatley appears to be underway, and many are already looking forward to enjoying it with their children. There is little doubt that this facility will also attract many visitors to North Hatley for up to five months each year, as seen in Sherbrooke with the popular Bleu Blanc Rouge rink. It remains to be seen how the municipality will manage this increased attendance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
