<\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\nIn 1971, NHRS was reorganized similar to its structure today. The Town of North Hatley and Canton de Hatley each had two representatives and all other organizations (Legion Red Cross, Community Centre, etc.) had one representative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Residents were required to pay a membership fee at the beach of $8.00 per family in 1972. There were 140 family members and approximately 120 children participated in swimming lessons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In 1974, plans were laid for developing a tots park and tennis court. Bruce Bishop was a guiding force in these projects. The land across from the beach was leased for the Massawippi Golf Course for $1 to develop the tennis courts. A Local Initiatives Project grant in the amount of of $9 500 was obtained in 1975 to develop the tennis facilities under the direction of Ray Losito and Bruce Bishop. The upper court was finished in 1975 under the grant. The lower court was completed in 1976 by fundraising (rockathon & swim the lake) and volunteer work directed by M. Munkittrick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The buildings and cement docks at the beach fell into disrepair in the 1980\u2019s. Dec 15, 1982 NHRS minutes – Mr. Robert Kyffin led a Special Finance\/Fundraising committee and reported $39 834.10 was raised to date. A total of $45 000 was raised. R. Cliche was awarded the contract and the docks were all replaced in Sept. at a cost of $28,217.70.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
April 26,1983 NHRS minutes- W. Sharman was put in charge of raising the building, filling in with cement blocks, installing a plywood floor over the cement floor, stairs etc. The estimate of $7938.30 was approved. This was done to get the building out of the flood waters in spring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1986, NHRS agreed to coordinate all sports in the town thus taking on the supervision of the rink, ball park as well as the beach. In the early 90\u2019s NHRS began fundraising to help with the financial demands. Two main activities included the Recreational Softball Tournament and and the bridge toll. Funds were used on projects such as improving the ball park and work on the new hockey rink and boards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In 1992, the land was purchased by the Municipality from Massawippi Valley Railway Company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A major step in improving the facilities for skating and hockey occurred in 1995 when the rink was moved from the Capelton parking lot to the new site beside the river. V2000 raised funds and had tremendous help from volunteers to build the new changing rooms, complete with indoor washrooms. NHRS and V2000 volunteers worked on levelling the skating area, planting grass and helping with new boards. This effort has been a wonderful example of what can be accomplished by a small community of dedicated volunteers who cooperated towards a common goal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Another major responsibility shift occurred in 1997 when NHRS agreed to take over the upkeep of the properties involved with recreation. Once again, budgets and responsibilities were increased for the organization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In 2008, the NH Golf Club decided to charge rental of $8 000 for the property where the tennis courts were located. Previously we were charged $1 year. As a result NHRS made a proposal to the town to start fundraising with a goal of $50 000 if the town would match their contribution. It was agreed and the land was purchased for $120 000 and NHRS raised $60 000. Shortly after new fencing was installed on the courts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Another activity which NHRS undertook was the annual Antique Show as a major fundraiser. Again lots of volunteer hours were put in to keep this event happening in our town. We also sponsored the concerts in the park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In 2014 NHRS initiated a fundraising campaign to renovate the building. A total of $37,000 was raised (MRC grant to NHRS $13,000, NHRS (rummage sale $5,000, personal donation $5000 and Mother\u2019s Day Run $3000), and municipality of NH $12,000. The Pleasant View Beach building received a new roof, gallery, and new siding on the building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In 2018, following conflicts over locked gates, financing of programs etc. the municipality took over the operation of sports from NHRS<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The North Hatley Recreation Society has survived only through the dedication of its many volunteers serving in physical labour, coaching, organizing, and administering of the programs and facilities. NHRS has also played a leading role in the development of our community spirit demonstrated by its commitment form its volunteers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
