The North Hatley marina building is currently in a concerning condition. According to several observations, it would likely be difficult for this building to meet current standards if a full inspection were conducted by the Quebec Construction Commission. In my opinion, major interventions should have been carried out long ago to prevent anyone from circulating inside this deteriorating structure.

A difficult 2025 dock rental season for the municipality

It should also be recalled that dock rentals, which were taken over by the municipality, experienced a difficult season last year. Based on my observations, fewer than 50% of the 42 available docks were rented in 2025. Yet, according to the former marina manager, before municipal management took over, there were historically waiting lists to obtain a boat dock.

A passage under the bridge that remains dangerous and difficult

Let us remember that the municipality, having acquired the docks for $200,000 as well as non-motorized watercraft for $20,000, will certainly need to attract more boaters this season. However, the passage under the pedestrian bridge remains a significant issue, considered difficult and potentially dangerous by nearly 200 boating residents who had already raised concerns in 2023. For pontoons or slightly taller boats, the passage is very challenging and is often blocked for part of the season when water levels are high.

Watercraft rentals

On the nautical activities side, watercraft rentals were entrusted to Location des Quatre Lacs during the 2025 season, generating $10,000 in revenue for the municipality. In my opinion, this service remains essential to promote access to the lake and support the local economy during the summer period, a key time for the profitability of village businesses. Moreover, one only needs to observe the current state of the village centre, where several businesses have closed. Fortunately, new businesses and entrepreneurs appear to be stepping in.

The question remains: will the watercraft rental service once again be entrusted to Location des Quatre Lacs for 2026? To date, no call for tenders or awarded contract has been made public. Given the current condition of the marina building, indoor access should no longer be permitted.

Let us hope that the 2026 summer season will offer a watercraft rental service that meets the expectations of both residents and visitors. And hopefully, dock rentals will allow the municipality to generate profits this year.

With that, wishing everyone a great summer season in advance!
